Polis Chrysochous · Cyprus · Twenty Years of Excavation
The limestone head represents a youth with a wreath in his hair. There are traces
of red, yellow and black paint on the wreath. The dark discolouring on the face
and hair was caused by the head lying in a layer of ash, dating to the burning
of the sanctuary in which the statuette stood. Numerous statuettes and figurines
were found in this layer, all with the head struck from the body. The archaeological
evidence points to the destruction of the sanctuary by the army of Ptolemy I,
Soter, in 312 B.C.
