The Upper Raritan Watershed Association (URWA) is a non-profit conservation organization located at Fairview Farm in Bedminster, New Jersey. They are seeking a full-time (40 hours/week) intern for the summer of 2007 to assist in all program areas, including Education/Natural Science, Watershed Projects, GIS, Property Management, and Development. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: planning and co-teaching summer nature day camps, stream monitoring and data management, inventory and stewardship of fee-owned properties, inspection of conservation easements and collection of baseline data, management of stewardship projects at Fairview Farm, and assistance with the general operation of the organization.

The intern will receive $2,500 for an 11 week position. Starting and ending dates are flexible.

OCEAN SCIENCES - BERMUDA
Paid summer internships are available at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS). Interns, who must be Princeton students, will work on cutting-edge marine science projects through a collaborative agreement with a faculty member from BIOS. Opportunities are also available for students to pursue independent thesis research under the joint program.  Potential project areas include, but are not limited to: oceanography and atmospheric sciences; marine biology and ecology; microbial ecology, marine genomics and ecotoxicology; natural hazard risk prediction; instrumentation for environmental monitoring.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY - PRINCETON
The Center for Environmental Bioinorganic Chemistry (CEBIC) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships are for undergraduate students who wish to gain research experience working with investigators affiliated with PEI’s Center for Environmental Bioinorganic Chemistry. The eight-week summer fellowship will provide a $3200 stipend. FOOD SERVICES - PRINCETON

Princeton University ’s Dining Services  provides meals in five residential dining halls as well as in Frist. In addition, Dining Services handles catering for special University events, and all while balancing the many demands of providing their core services to the campus community. FIELD ECOLOGY – USA & INTERNATIONAL
University of California, Santa Barbara, Wildlands Studies Program offers a series of environmental and cultural ecology field studies. For the past 27 years participants have joined backcountry study teams as working field associates, helping field study specialists search for answers to important environmental problems. Applicants can choose among eight wildlife, wildland and cultural ecology field studies searching for solutions to environmental and cultural challenges. No previous fieldwork experience is required—all necessary skills will be taught on-site by our team resource staff.

CONSERVATION - ALASKA
The Alaska Conservation Foundation’s Conservation Internship Program (CIP) is pleased to offer 15 paid internship positions in Alaska for summer 2007. The CIP was created to train the next generation of conservation leaders in America.  The positions range from energy efficiency to grassroots organizing, environmental education to wildlife management, and offer a wide variety of career paths in the professional field of conservation. Each internship is designed for students to learn about Alaska’s natural environment and diverse cultures; help preserve and protect Alaska’s pristine environment, gain important, practical job skills in the conservation field while helping the host organization meet its conservation program goals; obtain college credit; and meet and network with Alaska conservationists, agency personnel, local Alaskans, and other interns. Internships are available to United State citizens currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs.  Positions pay a stipend of $4,000 and provide for round trip transportation to and from Alaska, up to $1,000.  A complete list of host organizations and position descriptions are attached to this email and are also available on the ACF website at www.akcf.org.

OCEAN SCIENCES - SPAIN
Canarian Institute of Marine Science (ICCM)is a research institute belonging to the Regional Government of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Central East Atlantic. The role of the Institute is to contribute to the preservation of the environment by increasing public awareness of environmental problems and by developing scientific research projects that bring together agencies and resources related to aquaculture, fish biology, oceanography, etc. both at the regional and at the national levels. ICCM uses the ACOMAR Network (Alert, Control and Marine Observation) of the Canary Islands, a group of anchored devices supported by satellite observations that helps to maintain a direct connection with the under-sea activities that require urgent attention.
Placement is particularly suited to students interested in marine biology, EEB, or simply on environmental issues related to the sea. Good Spanish skills are essential. Background knowledge of ecology, biology, marine conservation is important.

Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (Within UNESCO's framework)
The Commission was established in 1961 by a UNESCO resolution. CONSERVATION / GENETICS - ROME
International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) is an international research institute with a mandate to advance the conservation and use of genetic diversity for the well-being of present and future generations. Founded in 1974, IPGRI is the world's largest international institute dedicated only to the conservation and use of plant genetic resources. WATER USE / HYDROLOGY – LONDON
International Water Association is a global network of water professionals, spanning the continuum between research and practice and covering all facets of the water cycle. IWA collaborates with The World Bank, the World Health Organization, and with the main UN agencies (UNEP, UNDP, UNESCO), dealing with water and sanitation on projects of common interest.
The selected intern would be working primarily in the development of the regional programs for IWA, which will be a mix of marketing, strategy, and research work. Additionally, he/she would be assisting the Regional Director. This internship placement will be for eight weeks at the organization's headquarters in London.
Requirements:

  • Either a technical engineering background or a policy background
  • Broad interest in environmental and development issues

CONSERVATION - VENEZUELA
Provita  is a non-governmental organization based in Caracas, Venezuela, with field projects on environmental conservation in various parts of the country. Some projects involve research on sustainable development for rural communities. Interns will be involved in analysis and gathering of baseline data of flora and fauna, and working on the development of an eco reserve and ecotourism. The last week of the internship will be spent in Caracas, based at IVIC, (Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas) producing a (required) written document related to the internship and/or Provita's projects on the island.
Students with a primary interest in community-based conservation or environmental education may be equally appropriate as those with a primary interest in ecology. Initial training will be mainly in English, but because those with the most to teach about Margarita speak only Spanish, a good knowledge of the language is highly recommended.

FORESTRY- INTERNATIONAL
The Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) was established in 1917, and started its activities in July 1918. Since then Metla has grown considerably; the current network of research centres, research stations and research forests covers the whole country. The Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) is a governmental, sectoral research institute, subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Metla’s duties are defined by the law and statute to promote, through research, the economical, ecological, and socially sustainable management and use of forests. In matters concerning the nature conservation areas, Metla is subordinate to the Ministry of the Environment. A list of opportunities is included.
