Environmental Studies
  Great Immensity

The Program in Environmental Studies (ENV) is a multidisciplinary forum for the study of the scientific, political, humanistic, and technological aspects of environmental problems. Through this program, students majoring in any department on campus can pursue their interests in the environment, and design a course of study that is consistent with their interests.

The program sponsors two core courses, ENV 201 and 202, which examine a broad range of concerns about the environment. Both core courses focus on regional and global environmental problems and the human activities that contribute to those problems, from scientific, political, social, and engineering perspectives.

ENV 201b and 202b include laboratories that fulfill the distribution area requirement for science and technology (ST). The program also offers several upper-level courses that complement the core courses and allow students to pursue a broad range of topics related to the environment. Students who complete all of the requirements for the ENV Program will receive a Certificate in Environmental Studies.

PEI sponsors several competitive senior thesis research funds to which undergraduates may apply to support travel, research, and supplies. Another important mission of PEI is to organize and support outreach activities that are aimed at K-12 teachers and students, private sector leaders, policymakers and the general public. Undergraduates are encouraged to participate in these activities, particularly by providing environmental science units for the classroom.
