Internship, Fellowship and Employment Opportunities

Princeton Environmental Institute (PEI) encourages students with an interest in environmental studies/issues to pursue internships that will contribute to their overall knowledge and understanding of the scientific, political, technical, and/or human dimensions of addressing environmental problems. Summer internships can also present students with an opportunity to make a real contribution to the resolution or exploration of environmental problems on a local, national or international scale.

Internship opportunities exist within government, NGOs, academic, and scientific enterprises for summer exploration and engagement with an environmental focus.  Students are encouraged to identify opportunities for summer internships with enterprises whose focus is consistent to their own interests and/or field of academic study.   Such experiences can be tremendously satisfying and in certain cases, may influence the focus of their junior or senior independent work or help define areas for future study or career choice.  Past examples of student summer internships include assignments with D& R Greenway; the Bermuda Institute of Oceanic Sciences (BIOS); Engineers Without Borders; and various branches of the federal government.  Many local and regional organizations are in need of highly-motivated and well-educated students to assist them in assessing problems unique to a particular residential community.

To assist students in identifying possible opportunities for summer internships, PEI provides information on known internship opportunities with sponsoring organizations on its website.  Descriptions of specific opportunities, links to application forms and contact information will be provided as available in an effort to assist students in their quest for summer engagement. Throughout the academic year, PEI will host information session and participate in campus forums that focus attention on internships and to offer inspiration and insight into the process of identifying a suitable opportunity. Opportunities

Public Service Internships
PEI administers the allocation of its funds in support of public service internships through Pace Center. Princeton undergraduates in good standing who wish to apply for funding for unpaid public service internships with an environmental focus should complete the 2008 Application for Student-Initiated Summer Public Service Internship Funding.

Other Internship Funding

PEI provides additional support to students who obtain unpaid internships with environmental organizations or other environmentally-focused enterprises that do not otherwise qualify under the strict definition of Public Service Internships. Applications for funding consideration are due on April 4, 2008. Applications received after the deadline will be considered pending the availability of funds.

Princeton University encourages active citizenship by supporting public service internships that have clear and significant educational value for student participants. All students applying for internship funding are expected to seek internships that meet the educational criteria outlined by the Office for the Vice President for Campus Life’s Summer Public Service Internship Policy and Process for both Domestic and International Opportunities document.

Public Service Fellowships

PEI works with sponsoring programs and departments throughout the campus community to identify Fellowship opportunities that have an environmental focus. Students are encouraged to visit each sponsor’s website and to submit applications as interested. Current opportunities are listed on our Fellowships.
