>> Economic Stimulus Law – Making Work Pay Tax Credit - Announcement

The Making Work Pay provision of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has provided for a tax credit of up to $400 for working individuals and $800 for married taxpayers filing joint returns.

For people who receive a paycheck and are subject to withholding, the credit will be applied through a reduction in federal income tax withholding based on new rate tables issued by the IRS. The tax credit will be calculated at a rate of 6.2% of earned income with a maximum credit of $800 for a married couple filing a joint return and $400 for other filing statuses. The Making Work Pay credit is phased out for single individuals whose modified adjusted gross income is in excess of $75,000 or $150,000 for married couples filing jointly. For those meeting the criteria, the credit will reduce the amount of federal income tax withheld from their paycheck and may result in an increase of net pay. It is not necessary to submit a Form W-4 to receive the tax credit.

  • Employees paid biweekly will see the change reflected in the March 18th paycheck.

  • Employees paid monthly will see the change reflected in the March 31st paycheck.
