Screening of Surplus Items for Hazardous Materials

Surplus equipment that contains any of the following hazardous materials must be disposed of in accordance with state and federal laws. Departments should notify the Surplus program (samf@princeton.edu) of any incoming surplus equipment (arriving to the Central Surplus warehouse) that contains one or more of these hazardous materials. If any such item(s) is scrapped (not sold or reused for its original purpose), all hazardous material(s) must be removed prior to disposal. More information about hazardous materials are contained on the Environmental Health and Safety web page. It is anticipated that departments will pay the cost of disposing of hazardous materials.

Examples of Hazardous Materials
  • PCB's (capacitors, transformers, oils, etc.)
  • Asbestos (electrical or thermal insulation)
  • Freons from refrigeration units (must be recycled)
  • Mercury (switches, manometers, thermometers, etc.)
  • Free Liquids (e.g. petroleum oils, flammable or combustible liquids)
  • Any compressed gases
  • Heavy metals (e.g. arsenic from MBE or other semiconductor research)
  • Lead (e.g. shielding in counting/survey instrumentation)
  • Radioactive sources (e.g. internal calibration or check sources in liquid scintillation counters, meters, etc.)
  • Mercury lamps
  • Lasers should be permanently disabled (Before ultimate disposal)
  • Batteries (lead acid, nickel cadmium, mercury, etc.)
  • Biohazard type materials
