The Purchasing Department often assists departments with general customs, export and shipping information. All merchandise entering and exiting the United States must clear Customs and is subject to a Customs duty, unless specifically exempted by law. Customs clearance involves a number of steps: entry, inspection, appraisement, classification and liquidation.

Importing/Duty Free Entry

The University has designated the following entity to serve as our brokerage firm to handle entry on our behalf:

Aloyd / Farrell Forwarding Co., Inc.
Attn: Joe Conti
150-30 132nd Avenue
, Suite 201
Jamaica, NY 11434

Phone: (718) 712-3300
Fax: (718) 712-1012

Temporary importing often avoids the payment of duties and taxes, but requires an ATA Carne'. Information may be found on the following location: International Trade Administration Resource Page.

General information on importing & exporting goods may be obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. Information and downloadable customs forms are available from their website: http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/forms/

Exporting

Information on filling out the "Shipper's Export Declaration" form may be obtained here: http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/www/correct.way.html

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, shipping brokers usually require an ECCN Export Control Classification Number. The Bureau of Industry and Security has instructions and forms available on-line at the following location: http://www.bxa.doc.gov/Licensing/exportingbasics.htm
