Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who are the University account representatives for each of the overnight delivery companies?

2. Does the cost of the shipment include insurance from DHL, Federal Express or UPS?

Yes, all carriers include $100 worth of insurance in their price for every package that you send.  If you need more insurance, the price is $0.70 per additional $100 of insurance for DHL and $0.50 per additional $100 of insurance for both Federal Express and UPS.

2. Is there a minimum that DHL, Federal Express and UPS charge for Insurance?

Yes, DHL, Federal Express and UPS charge at least $1.50 for Insurance.

3. Does the price stay the same when a package is sent to a home address instead of a business address?  If so, what is the additional cost?

The price for home delivery is more than the price for sending the packing to a business.  DHL and Federal Express add an additional $2.10, while UPS adds $1.05 for home delivery.

4. Does the type of package matter when shipping an express letter?

Yes, when shipping a letter, it should be place in the letter package from DHL, Federal Express or UPS.  If you do not place the letter in the correct package, you will be charged at least the one-pound rate, no matter what the weight of the package is that you are sending.

5. How much weight can I put in a letter envelope and still be charged the base letter price?

For DHL, you can only put up to 8 oz. in a letter envelope, which is about 30 sheets of 8 ½” x 11” paper.  For both Federal Express and UPS, the 8 oz. letter rate is charged no matter what you can fit into their standard letter envelope (we tested this and were able to get about 150 sheets of 8 ½” x 11” paper into the letter envelopes). This is a significant savings!

6. Does it cost more for a Saturday delivery?  If so, what is the cost of a Saturday delivery?

Yes, there is a cost for express pieces being delivered on Saturday. The cost for DHL is an additional $15.00, while Federal Express charges an additional $12.50 and UPS charges an additional $8.00.

7. Will there be any additional cost for sending packages to rural areas?

Yes, the cost for sending a package to a rural area will cost an additional $2.10 for DHL and for Federal Express and UPS it will cost an additional $1.30-$2.10 per package.

8. What are fuel surcharges and how are they calculated?

Fuel surcharges are an additional charge billed for packages that DHL and Federal Express deliver (UPS has no fuel surcharges). The fuel surcharge is a percentage added on to the total cost of the package.  The fuel surcharges changes monthly and are based upon a rounded average of the US Gulf Coast spot price for a gallon of kerosene-type jet fuel.

9. Do you have to use boxes supplied by the express carrier?

No, you can use any box that the materials can fit into. The only time you should used the packages supplied by the express carrier is when you are sending an express letter.

10. Oversize packages, what are they and what is the cost?

An oversize package is any package that is more than 84” in girth, which is the measurement around the box and down the longest side of the package. There is no set rate for an oversize package for DHL. Federal Express adds $30.00 per oversize package and UPS uses the 30 lb. rate for all oversize packages.

11. If I do not put a zip code on the package, should I send the package without the zip code?

No, if the package is sent without a zip code, DHL and Federal Express will charge you an additional $10.00 per package and UPS will charge you an additional $2.50 per package.

12. Is COD available from the express carriers?  If so, what is the cost?

COD is available from all express carriers.  The cost of COD from all the express carriers is an additional $8.75 per package.
