Social Security Administration Information

F-1 students with employment and J-1 visa holders are eligible to receive social security numbers. Representatives from the Social Security Administration visit the campus of Princeton University at the beginning of every fall semester. If international students and scholars miss this visit, they need to go to the Social Security Administration Office in Trenton directly. To apply for a social security number, an F-1 or J-1 visa holder must fill out an application and bring their passport, I-94 card, and I-20 or DS-2019. F-1 students must also bring a letter detailing their employment (contact OVS for more information). F-2 dependents are not eligible for social security numbers. J-2 dependents are eligible for a social security number with work permission.
