Arachne
Caption: Arachne
Creator: Velasquez
Title: The Tapestry Weavers or The Spinners ("Las Hilanderas") also known as The Fable of Arachne
Material: Painting
Date: c.1657
Current Location: Madrid, Prado 1173
Description: The foreground of this painting shows a genre scene of women spinning, but in the room behind we are taken into another dimension: the goddess Athena (Latin Minerva) appears before Arachne who stands in front of her tapestry. The composition of the painting, with its framed scene within a scene and its tapestry within the painting, mirrors Ovid's narrative technique of weaving stories within stories and working descriptions of works of art into his text.
