The re-installation work being done by the University's electrical workers is complete. The public utility company must now complete an inspection and testing of the installation and then re-activate the power to the site. The public utility company has been summoned and University staff will be working with the utility company to verify all necessary components. The final decision for the activation of the power will be made by the utility company. When this timeframe is known, it will be posted on this web site.

The installation and testing of the new equipment continues to proceed. Initial testing indicates that the system will be available no earlier than late this evening. Further testing may reveal additional work is necessary. This may delay the restoration of electrical power to buildings 8-14 until at least Tuesday. Lawrence Apartment residents affected by this power outage should continue to utilize the alternate resources made available to them by the Housing Department. The next update on the utility restoration will be made at 10:00 PM tonight on this web site.

The site has been cleared of all damaged material and the installation of the new electrical cabling is underway. Once the new cable is installed and terminated, testing will be done. Residents who are on-site may see the electrical crews who have been stationed there overnight begin to depart. This will indicate that the exterior work is complete and the focus will then shift to the interior work. As this process nears completion we will be able to establish a new estimated time of service restoration and that information will be posted here.

Electric repair personnel continue their work to remove the damaged material and prepare the site for installation of new electrical cabling. Work will continue throughout the night; lights, moving vehicles and utility repair noise will be present on the Lawrence site, behind the affected buildings. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to restore electrical service as quickly as possible.

Domestic electricity was lost at approximately 10:00 PM on September 2, 2006, in Buildings 2-14 of the Lawrence Apartments. The cause was an explosion that damaged electrical equipment, but resulted in no injury or structural damage. The service interruption in Buildings 2-7 was repaired overnight. As of 4:00 PM today, it is estimated that it may take up to forty-eight hours to restore electrical service in apartment in Buildings 8-14, with technicians working around the clock. Hot water service will also be interrupted for Buildings 8-14 during the repairs. The fire alarm, sprinkler, and emergency hallway lighting systems are all operating in all buildings, so residents are permitted to remain in their Lawrence apartments.

Alternate Resources for Residents

The following additional resources are being made available to assist Lawrence apartment residents until this utility outage is repaired:

  • Hot shower facilities: The shower rooms at Dillon Gym are open as follows (bring towels and toiletries):
    • Sunday, September 3, 2006, until 5:45 PM
    • Monday, September 4, 2006, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    • Tuesday, September 5, 2006, opening at 6:30 AM
  • Lanterns and flashlights: Lanterns or flashlights, as well as batteries, are available for pick-up in the Community Room of Lawrence Building 14. For safety, we ask that you not use candles to illuminate your apartment.
  • Reimbursement for eating expenses and perishable food: Please retain your receipts for any eating expenses or replacement of perishable food items that are attributable to this electricity outage. These may be submitted to the Housing Office, Attention: Andrew Kane, Director, for reimbursement. A limit has not been set, but we ask residents to use appropriate discretion in this regard.
  • Public Safety Officer on site: A Public Safety Officer will be assigned to patrol the Lawrence Apartments and respond to resident concerns. The Officer will use the Community Room of Lawrence Building #14 as a base.
  • Lodging: Since some may be uncomfortable staying in their apartments without electricity, Princeton University will pay for hotel accommodations for residents of Lawrence Apartments Buildings 8-14 who wish to relocate to either the Nassau Inn (609) 921-7500, in Palmer Square, or the Clarion Palmer Hotel (609) 452-2500 on Route 1, adjacent to Pep Boys. The Clarion offers a weekday shuttle service for those without vehicles, and parking charges at the Nassau Inn will be included for these emergency stays. When checking in, please identify yourself as a resident of Princeton University’s New Lawrence Apartments, and provide your name, address, and cell phone contact information.
  • Computer cluster and community room: The computer cluster and the community room in Lawrence Building 1, the “High Rise”, are fully operational.
We appreciate your patience as we work diligently to restore electricity service to your homes. Please refer additional questions to the Facilities Customer Service Center (258-8000) or to Public Safety (258-1000). Many thanks.
