"Communication and the Arts: Journalism and Culture"
This course will be devoted to the relationship between the cultures of journalism and literature in the twentieth century. We will examine in particular the symbiotic exchange between news and the novel, the social and ethical roles sometimes ascribed to the journalist, the relevance of Western canons of reportage to non-Western texts. Readings will be from both literary and theoretical works. Though our primary focus will be upon print journalism within the context of literature, we will also investigate literature's relationship to radio and television.

"Fiction: Theory and Practice"
An investigation of the fundamental aspects of prose fiction through close readings of major works from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Areas to be discussed include modes of description, narrative construction, and the representation of subjectivity. Key theoretical texts will be read alongside literary works.
