Bloodborne Pathogens

Other Personal Contamination Precautions

If you are working in an area where there is likelihood of exposure, do not:

  • eat
  • drink
  • smoke
  • apply cosmetics or lip balm
  • handle contact lenses

Do not store food or drink in refrigerators, freezers, counter tops or cabinets where blood or other potentially infectious materials are present.

Post freezers and refrigerators used for storage of infectious materials with labels indicating “biohazard” and “No Food or Drink”.

Never pipette or suction blood or OPIM by mouth. Minimize splashing, spraying, splattering, generation of droplets or creation of aerosols during experimental work.

For example, in laboratory work, transfer solutions by releasing drops along the inside surface of the receptacle rather than letting the drops splash into the solution and create aerosols. If you anticipate that you might generate aerosols, use a biosafety cabinet for your procedures.
