Transporting Blood Specimens or Other Potentially Infectious Material

When there is a need to move blood or OPIM from where it is initially collected, used, or identified, follow special procedures to prevent any exposure, contamination, or release while in transport. Always transport in a leakproof primary container and place that container (like the tubes shown here) in a secondary container if the outside of the primary container may be contaminated or if the specimen could puncture the outside of the primary container.

The transport container should be labeled with the biohazard symbol.
