Questions for Site Visit Meeting
1. Has the department been inspected by outside agencies? 2. What percentage of the Health and Safety Manager’s (HSM) time is spent on EHS related activities? 3. Is safety considered as part of annual performance appraisals? 4. Do you all feel that you have the training and support from EHS necessary to fulfill your responsibilities? 5. What is the procedure for purchasing hazardous materials, including lasers? 6. Is there a project review process that incorporates health and safety considerations? 7. How does the department keep people informed of health and safety issues? 8. Does the department do internal inspections? Use self-audit checklists? 9. How does the department identify who needs what health and safety training? (e.g., what training is necessary for a particular individual…regulatory vs. non-regulatory) 10. How does the department know whether an individual attended the appropriate training? 11. How does the department handle the in-house training? 12. (For Facilities Departments) Do temporary or summer employees receive safety training? 13. (For Non-Academic Departments) How do employees get personal protective equipment? 14. (For Non-Academic Departments) How does the department communicate with other departments and outside contractors? 12. (For Science and Engineering Departments) Do students receive training? 13. (For Science and Engineering Departments) Is there a “laboratory check-out” procedure when faculty, students or employees depart? 14. (OFFLINE) Does the HSM job description include EHS responsibilities?
