  SECTION 8: Aerial Lifting Equipment

Aerial boom platforms, cherry pickers, and other types of aerial lifts are often used to provide a safe, mobile alternative to scaffolding and ladders. Safe use of aerial lifting equipment requires familiarity with and following several general rules and procedures, including the following:

truck lift

General Requirements (top)

1. Only trained persons should operate lifts.

2. Lift controls should be tested daily before first use.

Fall Protection (top)

1. Occupants should stand firmly on the floor of the basket at all times.

2. A body belt (or harness) and lanyard attached to boom or basket should be worn at all times.

3. Occupants should not belt off to adjacent structures.

Use and Operation (top)

1. If so equipped, brakes and outriggers should be set before the boom is raised.

2. Lift should not be moved while extended, unless designed to do so.

3. Manufacturer’s load limits should not be exceeded.

4. When appropriate, warning signs (e.g., “Work Overhead”, etc.) or barricades should be used to alert pedestrians.

Overhead Electrical Hazards (top)

1. Only insulated aerial devices should be used for work on overhead power lines.

2. In all other cases, at least 10 feet should be maintained between the boom and energized electrical lines.
