Surveillance
The theme designated for the Program in Media and Modernity for the academic year 2001-2 is Surveillance. In the Fall 2001 semester, the program will sponsor a weekly film series entitled "Watching Watching: Surveillance and/as Film" in conjunction with Thomas Levin's undergraduate seminar on surveillance. In the Spring 2002 semester, Beatriz Colomina and Thomas Levin will offer the first of the team-taught seminars (MOD 500), on the topic of modern architecture as surveillance. The Art Museum, under the direction of Susan Taylor, will also present and exhibition on surveillance, curated by Thomas Levin, entitled "Anxious Omniscience: Surveillance and Contemporary Cultural Practice" which will run from January 19th - March 31st. On February 14th Levin will discuss the "Aesthetic Politics of the Arts of Surveillance" together with a number of artists participating in the show. Related events, including a lecture screening by the German political filmmaker Harun Farocki and a symposium on surveillance that will take place during the Spring, are also being planned.
