Highlights from the OIT newsletter

Take a look at the latest issue of it matters, the OIT newsletter, for information about the following topics.

Don't send it! is the advice OIT offers to those who receive phishing scam e-mail messages which ask for passwords and other private personal identification information.

Google search tips presented by Nancy Pressman Levy of the University's Donald E. Stokes Library give examples of handy and helpful shortcuts for quick answers on subjects as varied as local movies and currency conversions.

Technology updates discuss new and improved OIT services: an increase to 1GB for all faculty, staff, and student e-mail quota; the WebEx desktop conferencing service; and the MyFax service replacement for the campus fax gateway.

The final installment on best practices for improved security of departmental servers discusses hardware redundancy, use of test servers, patching (and patching again!, making backups, and following the concept of "least privilege" for users, to safeguard systems.

The OIT Training spring schedule includes a series of classes for those migrating to Vista/Office 2007. The classes are being offered monthly to allow coordination with migration dates. The OIT Training group will also schedule on-site training for departments; just send a note to training@princeton.edu. A wide variety of other subjects is also offered, ranging from a basic Introduction to Computers to details of using PhotoShop and InDesign.
