Position: Residential Experiential Education Facilitator
Position Summary:
If you have a heart for young people (ages 10-18), especially inner-city youth, Princeton-Blairstown Center (PBC) may be the place for you. As a PBC Facilitator, you might find yourself backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, canoeing the Delaware River, or facilitating initiatives in various inner-city centers from New York City to Philadelphia. PBC programs are as diverse as the population we serve; we are looking for staff members that are comfortable operating in a variety of environments: wilderness, inner-city, rural and suburban.
Princeton-Blairstown Center is located in the northwest corner of New Jersey, close to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and the Appalachian Trail. The Center has been dedicated to providing quality educational experiences to underserved inner-city youth for one hundred years. Princeton-Blairstown Center is an independent, not-for-profit support organization of Princeton University with program offices located on its 263 acre campus in Blairstown, and administrative offices in Princeton, NJ.
The Residential Experiential Education Facilitator (REEF) is responsible for the delivery of adventure/experiential education activities at the Blairstown site and at urban school locations throughout the New Jersey area. The adventure/experiential education activities may include adventure course, challenge courses, climbing wall, dam rappel, water activities, hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, canoeing, group process and individual counseling. The Residential Facilitators work with participants leading group initiatives both on and off of our challenge course to develop group cooperation skills as the participants work toward group and personal goals. We provide an extensive orientation to our program along with on-going training in outdoor adventure, experiential education. The position is full time for 12 months each year.
During the summer the REEF works predominantly on and around the Blairstown site. During the academic year the REEF works both at the Blairstown facility and with the community partners in a multi-year curriculum in urban schools and youth service organizations in Newark, Trenton, Camden, and Philadelphia. Extensive travel is required during the academic year.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Inspire and facilitate participant growth in the areas of self-confidence, self-esteem and compassion for others through your personal example and your connection to individuals and groups in your care.
- Lead and teach activities in the fields of adventure/experiential education and service learning, e.g., team and community building activities, high ropes course, canoeing, backpacking, bicycling, community service, cross-cultural understanding, and urban exploration both at the Blairstown site, in urban schools and at other sites and recreation areas.
- Assist in facility upkeep, housekeeping, and restorations.
- Assist with program logistics and administrative duties as needed.
Compensation:
- Compensation – Commensurate with experience – range $19,000 to $20,000.

Work Schedule:
The work schedule will vary from week to week and will include some weekends. Hours realistically average 40 to 55 weekly.
Essential Requirements:
- Experience living or working with people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
- Ability to travel extensively during the academic year
- Ability to live and work in both remote places and urban spaces.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to live and work outdoors in all seasons.
- Ability to work in high places such as ropes courses and in trees.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Wilderness First Responder certification. (Requirement can be met post-hire but incumbent is responsible for the cost of the course).
- First Aid, CPR and ARC Lifeguard Certification. (Requirement can be met post-hire).
Preferred Requirements:
We give preference to individuals with some or all of the following:
- Experience working with adolescents, especially youth from inner-city environments.
- Training and experience with rope courses, rock climbing, canoeing, bicycling, backpacking.
- Certification in First Aid, CPR, WFR or Life Guarding.
- College graduates seeking professional development and experience with outdoor/experiential education, inner-city and at-risk youth, education, counseling, environmental education preferred.
- Background in outdoor, adventure and/or experiential education preferred (significant training is provided if applicant has no previous experience in this area.)
- A Valid Drivers license
