Kanni Wignaraja is currently the Director, Capacity Development Group in
UNDP's Bureau for Development Policy. She has served with the United Nations
Development Programme for the past fifteen years, both at HQ and in the
field, serving as Deputy Resident Representative (DRR) in Vietnam, Chief of
Regional Programmes in the Bureau for Asia-Pacific, New York, DRR in
Indonesia, and Policy and Evaluation Officer with the United Nations
Volunteers in Geneva. Prior to joining UNDP, Kanni worked with the Ford
Foundation in New York and the International Centre for Ethnic Studies in
Colombo, Sri Lanka. She has contributed to numerous national development
programmes, articles and conferences in the areas of public administration
reform, institutional development, capacity development, leadership
development, HIV/AIDS and a human rights approach to development. In
Vietnam, she was presented with a national medal of recognition for her
contribution to development and legal reforms in the country. Today, she
spearheads UNDP's policies and positions in the UN development system, OECD
DAC and other partner institutions. She has been a Reader on the Global
Human Development Reports. In 2006, she was the Chair of the UN Working
Group on Capacity Development, comprising 12 UN agencies. Kanni holds a BA
in Economics from Bryn Mawr College and a Masters in Public Administration (MPA
