Sustainability Manager Position –
Update
Tom Nyquist reported interviews for the Sustainability
Manager position were held in January. There are two final
candidates. Reference checks are underway.
Recyclemania Competition
Darcy Copeland ’06 reported Princeton University has joined
the recycling contest “Recyclemania”. Darcy stated 93
universities are participating nationwide in the contest,
including Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Yale. The
competition will run from January 29, 2006 through April 8,
2006. The goal is to increase awareness about the students’
waste practices and to identify ways to reduce Princeton’s
overall waste. Weekly results will be posted on the
Recyclemania website,
www.recyclemaniacs.org .
Pollution Savings/Recycled Paper
Alex Barron discussed the environmental impacts of
Princeton’s campus-wide switch to recycled paper. Alex
discovered the environmental benefits of recycled paper at
the Environmental Defense website:

Alex distributed the Annual Environmental Impacts
Report, prepared by Greening Princeton.
Greening Princeton Dining Update
Greening Princeton representatives reported on local food
purchases, increasing organic foods served in campus dining
halls, local cage-free eggs, and organic milk. Greening
Princeton is interested in having a Farmer’s Market on
campus. Possible locations for a market were discussed. Stu
Orefice reported Dining Services continues to investigate
new vendors for supplies and equipment.
Food Matters Presentation and
Discussion
Rita Hindin ’75 gave a presentation on her proposal Food
Matters. Issues of food production, animal welfare, food
sources, local/regional and organic foods, as well as
funding challenges were discussed. Mike McKay stated the
committee will review the proposal and discuss it in more
detail at the next PEOC meeting in March. |
