Other Attendees: Nathan Gregory Chad Klaus, Helen Labun, Meg Messina

Mike McKay opened the meeting and asked everyone to introduce themselves.

Introduction of Intern, Hallett Johnson’04

Tom Nyquist introduced Hallett Johnson and spoke briefly about the projects that Hallett has been working on. Hallett just finished researching the University-wide cost benefits of the shuttles. Hallett, along with assistance from Greening Princeton and Tom Nyquist, is researching his next project – options to control Green House gas and the economics of solar projects. Don Weston offered to assist. Stu Orefice inquired if they had seen the Cornell study on recycling and using French fry grease.

Recycled Paper and Greening Princeton Update

Helen Labun presented a brief summary on the Recycled Paper Usage report (see attached), compiled from purchasing patterns from the past 11 months. She noted that the report did not include Printing and Mailing usage. Lisa Ridolfi reported that Boise is lowering the price of pcw paper. Don Weston noted that Boise representatives would visit departments which reported unfavorably on the recycled paper and work with the department to resolve issues. Leila suggested providing users of Boise with the proper tools to help change their ordering behavior.

David argued that as 60% of the University’s paper usage was virgin paper, there should be a University-wide policy to use pcw 100% allowing for the occasional exception. Mike McKay recommended that Don Weston, Lisa Ridolfo, and Helen Labun draft a paper from the PEOC to present to the Provost outlining a policy on use of recycled paper, to include supporting attachments. In addition, members of the committee (representatives from OIT, faculty, and Greening Princeton) would offer to meet with the Provost to present the paper as well as discuss University wide use of paper and the marketing of the policy.

Robin Izzo reported on the CCEE. She noted the following: All Ivys are now part of CCEE; mission includes distribution of a poster outlining how to measure environmental performance (available from Robin in a pdf format); the EPA has recognized higher education as a specialized sector with different needs and abilities; EPA has asked for three works groups to be formed, they are: environmental management systems, performance measurements, and regulatory innovations; and the establishment of a green team – an advisory board of faculty.

Sub Group Discussion: There was a discussion about establishing sub groups to work on specific issues/proposals. A sub group consisting of Robin Izzo, Jon Baer, Stu Orefice, and Greening Princeton was established to consider the recycling efforts on campus. It was suggested that the committee review the sub-groups established by Greening Princeton and work with those groups.

Announcement

Bill Jordan – Bill announced that he is leaving Princeton and that the next meeting will be his last. He expects to name a replacement shortly.

Other:

  • Robin Izzo suggested a future discussion about recycling efforts on campus (see sub group above).
  • Leila reported that placing computers into a sleep mode to conserve energy does not impact the back-ups, etc., that take place at night, so a discussion on how to distribute instructions to folks on how to initiate a sleep mode/standby mode is in order.
  • Bill Jordan suggested making double sided/journal copying instructions accessible to copier users campus wide.
  • Annual Report: The committee determined that it would provide an annual report to the Provost.
  • Communications Office: The committee decided to invite someone from the Communications Office to the next meeting. Steve Shultz was recommended.

Next Meeting – the next meeting will be the first week of February.
