Committee Attendees: Michael
McKay, Chair; Barclay Satterfield, Joe G. Conley, Andy Dobson,
Janet Gruschow, Robin Izzo, Cathy Kunkel, Tom Nyquist , Stu
Orefice, Don Weston, David Wilcove
Other Attendees: Jon Baer, Mary
Banfield, Rick Curtis, Christina Harris, Hallett Johnson, Chad
Klaus, Maya Yamato, Robert Ortego, Lisa Ridolfi
Michael McKay welcomed everyone to the
meeting. The following items were discussed:
1. Sub Groups – Update
Dining Services
Stu Orefice reported the Greening Princeton team and Dining
Services representatives visited a local farm, Guarino Sons
Produce, in National Park, New Jersey. Dining Services will
purchase Jersey tomatoes and peaches from Guarino’s this
summer. Dining Services will continue to purchase throughout
the year an increased amount of locally grown produce. A photo
taken at the farm of the Greening Princeton students and
several of the Dining Services staff will be put on display in
the Residential Colleges and the Frist Campus Center in the
fall. Stu stated Dining Services initiatives will be posted on
their web page over the summer.
Residential Eco
Representatives/Recycling
Jon Baer reported the recycling sub group met on April 19 and
worked on drafting a job description for the eco
representatives. The group discussed whether or not the eco
representatives should be tied into the Resident Assistant’s
position. Identifying ways to attract students into the
recycling program were also discussed.
Jon stated Tali Malott ’06 discussed the
recycling competition initiated by Ohio State at the February
meeting. If Princeton is interested in participating in the
competition in the spring ’05, a decision will need to be
reached at the fall PEOC meeting.
Students have been notified via emails
and flyers, as well as full page newspaper ads, to comply with
recycling during move out. Loft lumber and cinder blocks left
behind by the students will be removed by the Habitat for
Humanity organization or Jim Consolloy, Grounds Manager.
Leila Shabender reported a toner
cartridge recycling program is underway at the New South
Building. Computer clusters will also be targeted, and if the
program works well, recycling bins will be set up in the
dormitories.
Dave Wilcove asked how Princeton’s
recycling campaign compares with other universities. Jon
stated it is hard to make a comparison since some schools are
just beginning to start recycling programs. Robin Izzo stated
the Recycling Council reports recycling rates of other
universities on their web site:
http://www.nrc-recycle.org/councils/CURC/curcmembers/benchmarking_mem.html
The Environmental Health and Safety
Department is looking at new tools to identify recycling rates
which will allow us to do comparisons. Jon stated he will
present recycling statistics at the next meeting.
Purchasing
Lisa Ridolfi reported Purchasing will meet with Diane
Griffiths in the Copier Center to look at new technology
(printers) and ways to reduce the volume of paper on campus.
Lisa stated Mary Erickson reported five departments have
issues with the Aspen 100% recycled paper, such as jamming,
blotches on the paper, brightness, and humidity. Purchasing
will contact the departments experiencing problems and
schedule a site visit to see first hand what the problems are
and work on resolutions. A representative from PEOC will
attend the site visit for support, if necessary. Robin Izzo
stated at a recent Environmental Health and Safety Directors
meeting, 15 people from different schools asked about our
paper policy and how we went about doing it.
Energy
Tom Nyquist reported to meet the continual growth of the
campus the chilled water plant is being expanded. In addition
substations at Charlton Street and Elm Drive will be
increased. Energy saving projects such as installing air
handlers, geothermal heat pumps, temperature controls, high
efficiency washing machines are underway.
Tom reported he will present a paper at
the NJ HEPS Conference which will be held at Princeton
University at the end of May.
Leila Shabender stated she will check on
the most efficient energy “sleep mode” for desk top computers.
2. Other Issues
- The Committee agreed replacing
existing golf carts on campus with the General Electric
Motorcars (GEM) was a good idea. Mike McKay stated it is
important to understand the implications and benefits of
replacing carts on campus through attrition.
- Janet Gruschow reported Christina
Harris ’05 has accepted the Summer Intern position.
Christina will work on the PEOC Priority Projects list. She
will also work with Dining Services on their web site.
- The committee agreed PEOC
representation at the Fall Activities Fair and the Vendor
Fair would be great places to market PEOC and recruit for
Eco Representatives. Marketing recommendations should be
sent to Barclay Satterfield,
Barclay@princeton.edu
3. Next Meeting
Sub Groups will continue to meet over
the summer. The Committee will meet again at the end of
September. |
