Energy Conservation
Tom Nyquist, Director of Engineering, discussed energy
conservation projects on campus. Existing buildings are
being evaluated to identify ways in which energy dollars can
be saved. Tom reported there are strict sustainability
building design guidelines for architects to follow when
designing new buildings for the campus that will improve the
energy efficiency of the campus. These guidelines will also
provide direction for the renewal of existing buildings.
Tom reported motion sensors have been
installed in many buildings on campus. These sensors turn
lights on when there is movement in a hallway or office and
the sensors turn off when the space is not occupied. Tom
stated the program will be expanded.
Reinsulating steam tunnels, the
increase in natural gas prices, the installation of the new
chilled water storage tank were also discussed.
Energy Star Products Update
Peter Allen 07 reported the Purchasing Department is doing
an excellent job buying Energy Star products. Energy Star
is a government-backed program helping businesses and
individuals protect the environment through superior energy
efficiency.

Peter stated vendors used by the
University recognize there is a demand for these products.
As older appliances break down, they will be replaced with
Energy Star products. Purchasing is working with staff in
Faculty/Staff housing and university rental properties in
bringing in more of these products. Possible incentives for
purchasing Energy Star products were also discussed.
