Ph.D., Indiana University, 1971. Joined the faculty at Princeton in 1985, and is in the Council of the Humanities. He is interested in Theoretical linguistics, with emphasis on the foundations of generative grammar from the perspective of the Minimalist Program. He is the author of articles on bound anaphora, disjoint reference, and case theory; and Foundations of Generative Syntax (MIT Press, 1992); most recently "Exquisite connections: some remarks on the evolution of generative grammar" (with Jean-Roger Vergnaud), to appear in Lingua, and "On Defective Tense" (with James Lavine), to appear in the Journal of Slavic Linguistics. He is editor of Principles and Parameters in Comparative Grammar (MIT Press, 1991) and Current Issues in Comparative Grammar (Kluwer, 1995).
