Ph.D., Princeton, 1958. Joined the mathematics department in 1967. His interests include model theory, number theory, and the foundations of quantum mechanics. He is the author of numerous articles in these fields. In 1968 he was the recipient of the American Mathematical Society Cole Prize in Number Theory, which is given every five years for the most important contribution to that subject. He was the chair of the Mathematics Department from 1989 - 1992. In 1994 he became the Henry Burchard Fine Professor of Mathematics.
