Sponsor a Book Award

Your Chapter encourages undergraduate research with the presentation of book awards to outstanding graduating seniors in each of 14 science & technology Departments at Princeton listed below. Last year, more than 14 seniors (some Departments made multiple awards) received a physical book with an inscribed frontispiece like the one shown below. Many contacted us later to express their joy in receiving the award.

Sigma Xi - The Scientific Research Society Princeton Chapter; 2004 Book Award Presented to Noble Prize; Department of Electrical Engineering
You can participate by sponsoring a Princeton Sigma Xi book award for 2009. Several of the 2008 awards were supported by a sponsor.

The frontispiece provides an opportunity for a donor of the book to be recognized.  We would be pleased to have you or or your organization sponsor one or more of the 2009 awards. You may select a Department from the list below.

The donation needed to sponsor a book is only $100. The Princeton Chapter of Sigma Xi is a 501(c3) organization, making the donation tax

***Donations should be sent to the Chapter Administrator, Richard D. Smith (address below).

Nominate a Student for Sigma Xi

The Princeton Chapter seeks nominations both for Full and Associate membership in Sigma Xi.  Undergraduates are elected to Associate membership based on their demonstrated potential for excellence in research, as evidenced by their senior thesis, and at least a B+ average in their science courses at Princeton University.  First-year graduate students, or those having passed their general exams, frequently are nominated for Associate membership.  As with undergraduates, graduate students and others also must submit some evidence of their potential for research excellence (thesis abstract, research report, etc.) In order for students to join the Princeton Chapter, they must be nominated by an academic advisor. We accept nominations from the departments listed above. For more information about the goals and activities of this organization, please see the National Sigma Xi Website. Any questions about the nomination process should be directed to the Chapter Administrator, Richard D. Smith.

Apply for the Grants-in-Aid of Research Program

***Application Deadlines: March 15 and October 15 annually

The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has been providing undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences for more than 80 years. By encouraging close working relationships between students and faculty, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning.

The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.

While membership in Sigma Xi is not a requirement for applying for funding from the Grants-in-Aid of Research program, approximately 75% of funds are restricted for use by dues paying student members of Sigma Xi or students whose project advisor is a dues paying member of Sigma Xi. Students from any country are eligible to receive funding.
