With research interests originating in human conversation and storytelling, Justine Cassell became progressively more interested in how computational systems participate in these activities. This technological focus led her to deconstruct the linguistic elements of conversation and storytelling so that machines could be endowed with conversational, social and narrative intelligence to interact with humans in human-like ways. Her research has recently turned towards the impact and benefits of these kinds of technologies on learning and communication.
