Workshop participants will discuss how to analyze documentary films and their value in terms of truth, testimony and exploration
of reality. Uses of the documentary as a genre span from the original home movies of the Lumière Brothers to the “reality shows” of today’s global TV. Seeing how documentaries are made, and how they work with images and sounds to tell their stories, helps
us to understand the choices behind the “documentary evidence” they present us with. This will also provide a basis for assessing
the significance of new developments in the genre, such as the increasing exposure of filmmakers and documentary subjects as “performers”, the abandonment of the ideals of “objectivity” and the blurring of borders between fiction and documentary.
The workshop will be illustrated with samples from different kinds of documentary works. For undergraduate students only (pre-registration required).
