Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

 

CPT is an employment directly related to student's field of study and is an integral part of an established curriculum. It is an internship, practicum, or other type of employment that is either required for the degree program or taken for credit toward the degree.

The only programs at Princeton that require students to participate in a summer internship program after their first year of study are:

1. Master's in Public Affairs Program in the Woodrow Wilson School, and

2. Master's in Finance 2-year program.

The only departments at Princeton that offer summer internship courses are: Applied Mathematics (APC 599), Chemical and Biological Engineering ( ), Computer Science (COS 589), Economics (ECO 585), Electrical Engineering (ELE 515), Geosciences (GEO 598), Mathematics (MAT 599), Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE 515), ORFE (ORF 511), and Physics (PHY 580).

The only departments at Princeton that offer internship course during academic year are: Computer Science (COS 590) and Electrical Engineering (ELE 514).

Eligibility

• You have been in lawful immigration status and a full-time student for at least one academic year;

• You are currently in F-1 status;

• You have a job offer from a specific employer with established employment start and end dates;

• You may not begin your summer employment before June 1.

• You must end your summer employment before classes begin in the Fall semester (September 13 in the Academic Year 2012/13)

• You must register for the course and fulfill all the academic requirements. For more information on course requirements, please consult with your Department and/or the Graduate School Catalog. Note that registering for a course and fulfilling all course requirements is key to maintaining your F-1 status.

Application

To apply for CPT, please bring the following to the Office of Visa Services: 

1. Advisor’s CPT Recommendation Form completed and signed by your academic advisor, indicating that the employment will be credit bearing, that you have registered for the credit, and that the employment is an integral part of the academic program. 

2. A letter from your employer that MUST include (Please note that an offer letter from the employer may not include this exact information. If that is the case, you would need a new letter from your employer with the required elements). Faxed or emailed letters are acceptable if they are sent directly to Visa Services.

• Job title

• Dates of employment

• Number of hours of work per week

• Location (including a full address) of employment

• Brief description of the work.

3.CPT Student Certification Form- You need to complete all sections.

4. Your original I-20 (we will issue a new I-20, endorse permission for CPT on the new document and return both documents you).

Important Notes

• Estimated CPT processing time is up to 5 business days, so please take this into consideration when making employment plans;

• CPT authorization will be noted on the third page of your I-20; you may not begin your employment before you pick up the endorsed I-20 from the Davis International Center/Office of Visa Services;

• CPT may be authorized for part-time (20 hours or less per week) or full-time (over 20 hours per week);

• A new application is required if there is any change of employer, location of employment or if the employment ending data expires;

• Your local U.S. address information must be current in SCORE;

• Use of full-time CPT for one year or more eliminates eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Use of part-time CPT does not affect eligibility for OPT. 

• If your employer requires you to apply for a Social Security Number prior to starting your job, note that you may apply for a SSN up to 39 days prior to your CPT start date. You will need to bring your I-20 with CPT authorization on the third page plus an employment letter.
