F-1 Employment

Employment is defined as any type of work performed or services provided in exchange for money, tuition, fees, books, supplies, room, food, or any other benefit.

Like all nonimmigrant categories, the F-1 category is bound by the general restriction on employment. In order to maintain valid F-1 status, a student must NOT work in the United States, unless the employment is specifically authorized under the regulation.

Do not assume that you are automatically eligible to work in the U.S. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) considers unauthorized employment to be the most serious violation of F-1 status.  Please consult with Mladenka Tomasevic , the International Graduate Student Advisor, before accepting any employment.

Two categories of employment are generally available to F-1 students at Princeton University:

On-Campus Employment

Off-Campus Employment (CPT, OPT)
