Dependents
Please note that only a legal spouse and/or unmarried child under the age 21 of F-1/J-1 students are eligible for dependent F-2/J-2 visas.
- 2011-2012 Financial Requirements for graduate students and their dependents
Single (unmarried) international graduate students are required to document $62,526. This total is based on the tuition, fees and the estimated living expenses for twelve (12) months as determined by the Graduate School. If you are married and would like to bring your dependents to the U.S., you will need to document additional living expenses of at least $18,511 for a spouse and $11,902 for each child that accompanies you.

Please submit the following items to the Office of Visa Services:
1. Original, personal bank statements in English and in U.S. dollars. We cannot accept faxes, photocopies or web printouts from savings, checking, certificates of deposit, etc. Investment funds that cannot be made liquid for you to use as support cannot be accepted.
2. If a sponsor will be supporting you, you may submit an original letter from the sponsor outlining the support AND documentation of the source of support (for example, original bank statements showing adequate funds, a letter from the employer indicating adequate salary, etc.).
3. Copy of your current Re-enrollment Reply. If you are a first year student, please submit a copy of your Admission Reply form.
The following biographical data about each of the F-2 dependents should also be submitted to Visa Services (or you may submit the F-2 Dependent Information form):
- FAMILY NAME, First Name of each dependent
- Date of birth (month/day/year)
- Country of birth
- Country of citizenship
- Relationship to applicant (wife, husband, daughter, son)
The following biographical data about each of the J-2 dependents should also be submitted to Visa Services (or you may submit the J-2 Dependent Information form):
- FAMILY NAME, First Name of each dependent
- Date of birth (month/day/year)
- City of birth
- Country of birth
- Country of citizenship
- Country of permanent residence
- Relationship to applicant (wife, husband, daughter, son)
Please note that F-2 dependents are not eligible for employment or full-time/part-time studies in the United States. J-2 dependents may apply for employment authorization to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). For further information about J-2 Work Authorization, click here.
