Maintaining F-1/J-1 Status
Please read the following instructions very carefully and remember to follow them throughout your stay as an F-1/J-1 student at Princeton University:
- Report to the Office of Visa Services no later than 15 days after your I-20/DS-2019 start date;
- Attend the school you are authorized to attend;
- Pursue a full course of study every semester;
- Keep a current, living U.S. address updated at all times;
- Have a passport that is kept valid at all times, unless exempt from the passport requirement (students from Canada);
- Have a valid form I-20 ID or a valid form DS-2019 (apply for extensions of program before the expiration date on the current I-20 or DS-2019);
- Follow transfer out procedures to attend another school and transfer in procedure when transferring to Princeton from another school;
- Follow University procedures and inform the Office of Visa Services if changing from one educational level to another (Master's to Ph.D. or Ph.D. to Master's);
- Limit employment both on campus and off, to a total of 20 hours per week (includes assistant in instruction and research appointments) while school is in session (September - June);
- NEVER work off-campus before obtaining a proper work authorization;
- Carry appropriate health insurance coverage:
◦ All enrolled F-1 and J-1 are automatically covered under the Princeton University Student Health Plan
◦ J-1 students must maintain required coverage for all J-2 dependents.
