Travel Information

Before any trip outside of the U.S., you need to make sure that you have the appropriate documents with which to travel and a valid travel signature on your I-20/DS-2019. You will need the following first item for a signature and all 4 items for reentry into the U.S.:

A valid I-20/DS-2019

  • You can get a signature from Mladenka Tomasevic, the International Graduate Student Advisor, in the Office of Visa Services, 120 Alexander Street (2nd Floor).  You must be enrolled and maintaining your status to receive a signature. You will leave your I-20/DS-2019 in our office. Your document will be signed and ready for pick up the next business day. A travel signature is valid for one year.

You are not required to present any additional documentation to the Office of Visa Services.

You should also carry all previously I-20s/DS-2019s issued when you travel.

Evidence of Financial Support

       Financial support can be demonstrated by one (or a combination) of the following;

      ▪ copy of your current re-enrollment reply, or a copy of your admission reply if you are a first year student;

      ▪ letter from your department outlining financial support and student status;

      ▪ a scholarship or a fellowship award letter indicating the duration and amount of support;

      ▪ a personal bank statement;

      ▪ a letter from a financial sponsor and documentation of his/her ability to support you (bank statement, letter of employment, etc.); 

A valid passport (except for Canadian citizens arriving by land or sea).  

A valid F-1/J-1 visa stamp in your passport (except for Canadian citizens).

Travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean for trips fewer than 30 days

F-1 students on OPT and J-1 students on AT

Canadian Citizens

Travel to a third country
